timeline for collections and suits

Does anyone know how long it takes to go from collections to lawsuit? Is $5000 or $3000 worth the creditors time? I have received a collection letter for my Providian account and when I called they told me it had been returned to Providian. Does this mean they are working toward a lawsuit? Due to unemployment the last payment was made in Nov--am I screwed? I've never been in this situation before and am really scared. Any help is appreciated.
