credit cards and disability

i had several credit cards and then i became disabled as a result of a car accident.my husband was getting a va pension and that along with my disability was enough to pay my monthly credit card bills at the minimum amount.my husband suffered several strokes and was put in a nursing home. his va pension was reduced drastically. i can no longer pay anything on these cards. can they sue me ? it does no good tring to explain this situation to these companies!
