time limit to request validation from ca?

i have 2 ca's (different accts.) that have been hounding me for about 6 months. one is "osi" for about $1400 and the second claims $850 (and growing weekly).
the second is ShermanAcq/NEC which seems to have purchased the account. they say it is too late to validate.
what is my best approach now? request validate or cease and desist?
both accounts claim @ $400-$500 more than when i stopped paying because the would not work with me when i became unemployed. i have mostly not answered their calls but they have caught me a few times to talk and refused to work anything out except for full payment. any advise is greatly appreciated as i still have very little $$$ to pay them...thanks.
