Since you are being sued, it is not too late to exercise your rights. Since you are not really sure what this account is for and if the balance is correct, (how can you know that), you can respond by answering lack of knowlege in your response. Make sure you respond or you will get sued. Also same day send them a request for validation, certified mail, receipt requested.

Did they send you a dunning letter. If they never sent a dunning letter, you were never properly given you your miranda rights and that is something you can use in your favor.

A simple call is not notification of a debt. After the call, they are required to send you a dunning letter giving you the information you need and giving you a minimiranda notice.

Others will add to what I said and clarify better.
