How to deal with shady CA...?

Hey guys...
I wanted to get an opinion on whether or not I should attempt to reach a settlement with a CA that has filed a motion against me in court yet they are unlicensed for collection in NYC according to the Dept. of Consumer Affairs and is that grounds for dismissal of any judgment or case against me? Also, even if that does negate any legality of collecting, what would happen after that?
The CA has such a horrible reputation, I don't know if it's even sensible to try to reach an agreement with them...Any advice?
