You need to stop talking to them. PERIOD.

They are doing exactly what they do best: Lie. Do not fall for any of it. Even if they sue you, bankruptcy will stop it. If they get a judgment, then you'll have to get a bankruptcy attorney to vacate the judgment for an extra cost, but it can still be wiped out.

But how long has it been since you paid the original creditor? If these accounts are beyond the statute of limitations for your state, they're uncollectible to begin with. Check Why Chat's site (in the "Newcomers" post) and see if the account is within or outside the SOL for your state. If it is expired, then send them the SOL letter and watch them gnash their teeth and go away.

Don't talk to these bozos. I went all the way to the judge's bench with them on an expired account, and they backed down.
