Hello forum :) Please see if you can help me.

I just received a bill from a third-party collection agency with respect to a "U.S. Department of Education" student loan.

The amount of the original loan was less than nine hundred dollars. The collection agency is now asking for two thousand.

To the best of my knowledge, it has been more than seven years since the loan defaulted (I was pregnant and homeless, escaping from an abusive marriage, at the time). I was under the impression my mother eventually paid the loan for me, a year or so afterward when I was trying to get back on my feet. I don't have proof of this and it's possible she really intended to do it but forgot (she does this a lot).

There is a question whether I even owe the money in the first place, given that I withdrew from school.

Unfortunately, I do not have any of the paperwork for the loan in question. It "disappeared" sometime during the period when I was abused or homeless.

I read that there is a statute of limitations on personal debt. The debt was incurred in Georgia, and I presently live in Texas. Does anyone know the applicable limitations statutes that apply?
Do they apply to Federal student loan debt?

I cannot hire an attorney or make payment arrangements right now because I am between jobs and working as a temporary. The money I get from temp work just barely covers my bills. My mom is in the hospital dying of breast cancer and can't help me.

What can I DO?

I appreciate any advice you can give.
