Do I Need To Request a Validation Letter?

I am not getting any letters from the collection agency. I am assuming they are going to my ex-husband's address. I want to clear this entire mess up before a charge-off goes on my credit report. I'm pretty sure the charge-off is next month (March) because last payment was received in September of 2002. Do I contact the collection agency requesting a validation letter so I can pay this account off?
