I can't change the past, but have a high balance owed on an American Express card ($19k). I made 1 payment in the past 6 months, but for $75. I also just sent a check today for $50.

I was supposed to be enrolled in consumer credit counseling in Oct, but got laid off before it could start. I just started working 3 weeks ago and was going to reinstate my consumer credit counseling acount and start paying this Amex card.

The collection agency contacted me for the first time yesterday. They called and said I had to have the full amount by noon. Or else they were sending the case to 'Legal'.

What can I do in this situation? I called Amex to see if I could work something out with them, but they said that my account was turned over to a collection agency and it is no longer with them. What does this mean?

Is my new employer going to find out about this? Can I arrange a payment plan with them?
