are you responsible for the debt of the deceased?

my boyfriend's mother recently pasted away leaving some medical and credit card debt. she had a small life insurance policy and a house that is in hers and her husband's name. the problem is that her husband is alive, but in hospice. he receives disability and SS, but a small amount. being that his father cannot communicate and cannot leave his bed, is my boyfriend, who will now get the house, responsible for his parents medical and credit debt? we live in NJ and are uncertain of the laws regarding this issue.
