Need to be Educated on Charge Off

I have a debt from 1998 which was written off by the original credit card company. I am now getting vicious calls from a collection company--and when I tried to settle it for about 50% of the amount, they agreed. When I sent my credit card number to charge it along with a statement that this resolved the debt, they suddenly said it didn't. They are now starting to sound threatening.

Any suggestions for what to do?
