Hi there! Hoping to get some answers from you.

My friend's wife gave birth here in US in 99. Then she went home to her country (out of US). The thing here is the medical/hospital bill is under her name but my friend signed as a guarantor to that hospital. The bill (plus doctors fees) totalled to almost $8000. The years of 2000 & 2001, he'd been paying about $50-75 monthly by his personal check to the hospital. Due to some financial prob, he stopped for a couple of months & now his name is sent to collection agency. He didn't make any move yet. He's confused as what to do next. He's thinking to just continue paying the hospital again (about $50/month) which of course the hospital didn't agree in the first place. Now, can they really force him to pay the bill lumpsum? How soon can the agency report this to the credit bureau? Please advise as we're not aware of any rights we have about this collection agency. Also, can they really go after him even though he's only the guarantor? If so, what is the best way to negotiate with the hospital directly instead of this annoying collector.

Sorry, posted too long...rambling already. Thanks for ur time & help. God bless!
