The Fax is OK, its in writing, but w/o a signature on it, they can deny it. An 80% settlement IS high - don't accept it. They paid pennies (or less) on the dollar for that account and at 80% they'd STILL be making a huge profit. Send them a counter-offer, start at 25% and work your way up, but I certainly wouldn't go beyond 40-50%. How old is the debt anyway ? The older it is, the less you offer them. Accept NOTHING w/o a written SIGNED agreement, and insist on a MAILED copy.
