Letter seeking info

I received a letter in the mail from a law office in NY demanding payment on an old Providian account. Apparently they have bought an old charged off account. They have started calling me at work and recently sent a fax to another building associated with our office sent to Attention: Supervisor listing my name and social security number for all to see asking for my current address, phone number, am I employed by them etc. My question is - Is this all legal - Should I respond to it - If so, how?? Thanks!!
