Trouble with FirstUSA/BankOne and collection agency

I have/had an account with FirstUSA/BankOne that I stopped charging to in 1997. The last payment I made to them was in October2000. I was unable to continue paying off the balance as I returned to school and all the service fees kept eating me up. It's now getting close to 4 years since I last made a payment to FirstUSA/BankOne (the statute of limitations in Texas is 4 years). Recently, a collection agency has been calling my Dad's house almost daily threatening lawsuits if I don't pay them. My dad is too afraid to tell them to stop calling for fear that they may act on their threats. I am now in graduate school (and will be for another 2 years) and living off Stafford loans so I still don't have money to pay anyone. I'd like to send a letter to FirstUSA/BankOne and ask them to stop their collection agency from continuing to bother my father. What options are available to me to get the collection agency to stop hounding my dad?

Another related question: If I send FirstUSA/BankOne a letter letting them know that I am still willing to pay back my debt and to stop calling my dad, will that reset the statute of limitations? Should I wait on contacting the bank until after October of this year (end of SOL)?
