SOL and paying off debt

I have 5 credit cards with date of last payment July 1996. I wonder why the companies have not sued yet? All together I owe about 25,000. I am able to start paying them back little by little, but I am afraid that I will restart the SOL and prolong getting the negative marks off my credit report for another 7 years. I feel so guilty, but I don't know what to do next. Any help would be appreciated.
