Using Amerix or similar for debt consolidation

I was wondering what the pros & cons are of using a debt relief program such as Amerix or similar. We are in about over our heads, something I swore I would never let happen. I don't want to file bankruptsy but have heard that the debt relief programs can be just as bad. I'm considering something like Amerix to negotiate with my credit card companies with interest rates etc. They say on their site it shouldn't really affect your credit especially if you are already showing a few late payments (which we do have, not severe, but they are there), but I have heard otherwise. I also worry that if I do go that way, the credit card companies I use won't agree to this (one being MBNA, which I sense won't be very cooperative), but I could be wrong.
